‘Cerebellum Prolapse’ Surgery at İskenderun Private Gelişim Hospital

33-year-old Ramazan Çirci, who lives in Payas District, regained his health as a result of the successful operation performed at Private İskenderun Gelişim Hospital, where he came due to Chiari Malformation disease, known as cerebellum prolapse. Brain, Nerve and Spinal Cord Surgery Specialist Op. who performed Ramazan Çirci’s surgical intervention. Dr. Selçuk Gözcü said that the patient’s complaints have ended and he can continue his life in a healthy way from now on.
Stating that they successfully completed a risky surgery, Op. Dr. Selçuk Gözcü said, “Our patient, who was admitted to the hospital because he could not maintain his balance on his own, had a severe headache and neck pain that radiated to the arms. Ramazan Çirci, who also had a speech disorder, had a serious decrease in his manual skills. As a result of our examination and tests, we detected Chiari Malformation in the patient and recommended surgery. We removed the bones from the back pit of Ramazan Çirci’s skull and carried out the enlargement process.
We also performed an enlargement procedure on the meninges of our patient, in which we provided relief for the cerebellum and brainstem at the back. In this way, we eliminated the pressure inside the brain. After the successful surgery, we discharged our patient. During our check-ups after the two-month rehabilitation period, we saw that our patient’s complaints had completely resolved. With both the physical capacity and existing equipment of our hospital, we can perform such high-level surgeries in our hospital. “I would also like to thank the anesthesia and operating room team who contributed to this success.”

“This disease has many risks, including death”

Stating that Chiari Malformation, popularly known as cerebellar prolapse, occurs congenitally, Op. Dr. Selçuk Gözcü: “Chiari Malformation is the prolapse of the cerebellum and brainstem into the spinal canal. Since the posterior pit of the skull remains small at birth, the cerebellum and brainstem are displaced within the spinal canal. For this reason, problems with the patient’s balance may occur. In such patients, symptoms such as headache, gait disturbance, neck pain in the arms, muscle weakness, and speech disorder are observed. Patients also lose social communication. This syndrome has many risks, from paralysis to death. If left untreated, the risk of paralysis may be high as the disease progresses with age. The balance center is affected because the cerebellum compresses the spinal cord and causes fluid accumulation inside it. There is a blockage in the path of the cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. “It can only be treated surgically,” he said.

“My illness was a nightmare for me”

Ramazan Çirci, who was diagnosed with Chiari Malformation, expressed his happiness for being cured of the disease and said, “I noticed my disease 12 years ago. Lately, I’ve been unable to button up my buttons. I wasn’t enjoying life anymore. Even though I applied to many centers before, my complaints continued. As a result of my research, Dr. I applied to Selçuk Gözcü. Dr. I trusted Selçuk Gözcü and decided to have surgery. All the problems I had after the surgery are over. My greatest happiness was being able to return to my social life. “My family and I are grateful to my doctor, Selçuk Gözcü, who brought me back to life,” he said.
